There is probably no other place on Costa del Sol where so many new constructions are built as in La Cala. If you are in for a completely new apartment, this is a good place to start looking. Most are located outside of the village so if you are looking to live in the village itself you might have to go for a refurbished apartment instead. On the other hand most new units offer nice pool areas and green gardens. Prices for apartments in La Cala start at little more than 100 000 € and you have a wide selection of 1-, 2- and 3-bed apartments at all price levels between 150 000 € to 350 000 €. Beachfront or particularly exclusive apartments and penthouses may exceed 400 000 and 500 000 euros.

Townhouses in La Cala
Still being a small village, you can easily find townhouses in the centre. These are optimal if you are looking for easy access to all amenities as well as living close to the beach. You might struggle to find a centric townhouse with pool though. The new developments on the other hand, located outside of the centre, often sport nice pools and green areas, still at reasonable prices.
Most townhouses cost between 250 000 and 400 000 €, but you might find small ones for under 200 000 € and some beachfront communities or newly built ones reach well beyond 500 000 €

La Cala and surroundings
La Cala de Mijas is located in the centre of the municipality de Mijas Costa, just a few kilometres west of Fuengirola and 15 km east of Marbella.
La Cala comprises a small center where we find many shops, banks and other services. The center is located straight at the beach.
Outside the center, many communities are recently built or under construction. Just like the new developments Jardinana och Fairways, most of these properties also have a pool and a higher standard of equipment. The beach might be further away, but on the other hand, the distances are seldom huge here and mostly the beach and center is within 15 minutes walk.
General info
In the 1960´s La Cala de Mijas, which at that moment was still called “La Cala de Moral”, named after the many Mulberry trees that grow in the local area, was a typical Andalusian fisherman´s village. If you look out over the Mediterranean in the early morning, you can still see the small fishing boats out at sea to supply the various “chirinquitos” and local restaurants with their catch of the day!
In the early 90’s, the name was changed to La Cala de Mijas to avoid confusion with another small village located east of Malaga, which to date is also called La Cala de Moral. At this stage the status of the village changed more and more into a tourist destination mainly visited by the British.
Currently the village has a population of approximately 10.000 citizens and is rapidly growing with the current construction of various modern and high end properties. La Cala is very popular among both local and international residents due to the great infrastucture, with lots of local amenities like public schools from kindergarden to secondary education, a cultural centre, public library, post office, health centre and lot´s of bars and restaurants!
Further there are numerous golf courses within only a few minutes drive like the 72-hole La Cala golf resort, Calanova golf, El Chapparal golf, the 36-hole at Mijas golf, my personal favorite Santana golf and the 9-hole course La Noria which is located only 200 meters from the village!
La Cala de Mijas also has it´s own football club and adjecent indoor sport centre including a large gym. Horseback riding can be done in the Mijas mountains where various paths are created. The easiest choice would be going up to the Hipodromo, the local race course, but there are also various smaller stables where the owners organise classes and tours.
Lots of visitors of the area also visit the local street market just outside the village on wednesday and saturday mornings. Here you can find fresh fruit and vegatables, souvenirs and lots of other items. The market is from 9.00h to 14.00H.
In summer the local town hall organises various shows with live entertainment on the boulevard at the beachfront with different kinds of music and ´Flamenco show´. Well worth a visit to still see some of the original Spanish culture.
Las but not least we would like to mention the ´Senda literal´. This is the new beach promenade that has been inaugurated in 2015 and connects La Cala de Mijas with Riviera del Sol and Calahonda. A lovely walk can be made along the Mediterranean and while enjoying the beautiful views there are various typical beach restaurants and modern beach clubs where you can stop for a refreshing drink, a lovely meal or both!
