The importance of sunglasses and traffic regulations in Spain!
It’s well-known that the sun’s rays can cause significant eye damage, making sunglasses essential when the sun is strong. According to the Spanish traffic authorities (DGT), it’s crucial to wear approved sunglasses. They recommend purchasing them from an optician or a store qualified to sell such products.
Sunglasses Categories and Their Protection Levels
The DGT has categorized sunglasses based on their protection levels:
- Category 0: Clear or very lightly tinted lenses, mainly for fashion and indoor use. These block 19% of light.
- Category 1: Pale lenses suitable for cloudy days, blocking 56% of light. These are not allowed at night.
- Category 3: Dark lenses ideal for sunny days, blocking 92% of light. These are the most common and are not allowed at night.
- Category 4: Very dark lenses for high sun exposure, blocking 98% of light. These should not be used while driving.
Violating these rules can result in fines of 200 euros, reduced to 100 euros if paid promptly. Remember, these regulations apply to all vehicles on the road, not just those requiring a driver’s license.
For Individuals with Vision Problems
If you have vision issues or need corrective eyewear, you must wear optician-approved sunglasses with the correct prescription. Fines of 200 euros also apply if this rule is violated.
Previously, it was mandatory in Spain to carry spare glasses in the car for those who needed them due to driver’s license requirements. This requirement has been removed and is now only a recommendation.
