El Castillo de Fuengirola - Sohail Castle

Continuing the cultural journey of what to do around Costa del Sol, today we look at the nearby Sohail Castle in Fuengirola.

El Castillo de Fuengirola - Sohail Castle was built in AD 956 by Abd-ar-Rahman III to strengthen the coastal defences. Excavated stone ruins on public display at the western base of the hill on which the castle sits date back to before the Romans occupied Fuengirola at least 300 BC.

It sits at the river mouth of the Fuengirola River. On a small isolated hill that rises 38 metres above sea level and in the centre of the Costa del Sol highway. This makes it a lookout and a prominent focal point. The castle has a rich history, much of it well documented.

After the castle was no longer needed for its military function, it proceeded to its public auction. The passage to civilian hands introduced it into a period of abandonment. Until the 1980s the castle continued this neglect. However during recent years the local authorities have renovated the castle.

Tourist attraction

A local Workshop School has enabled it to be ideally used as a meeting place for the local community. Different cultural events can be celebrated here turning it into a tourist attraction.

This recovery has been well received as evidenced by the attendance of many people, both local and visiting. Events and concerts are being held at the monument including the City of Fuengirola Festival. This later on has been held at the Castle Sohail for more than ten years.

The festival is a big event in the local social calendar, with many events taking place from May to September each year. Attracting large audiences and the presence of personalities from the music and cultural world.

Summer events

Recent concerts held at the castle have included artists such as Sting, The Beach Boys, Simply Red anfd Jamie Cullum as well as regional and National artists. In 2018 we look forward to the main concerts featuring Santana (9^th August 2018) and Ricky Martin (16^th August 2018).
