Mijas is the largest municipality on the Costa del Sol. Its land extends from the mountains of the same name, down to the sea, through a landscape of hills with 12 km of coastline.
The municipality consists of four key areas. Mijas Pueblo, Mijas Costa, La Cala de Mijas and Las Lagunas. It is set on the Mediterranean coast. It is bordered by the towns of Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Alhaurin de la Torre, Alhaurin el Grande, Marbella, Ojen and Coin.
Mijas Pueblo is the best known village within the area boasting spectacular views. Thousands of tourists visit the village each week for a walk through the historic centre or a tour with the donkey taxis which have recently been fully licenced. It also has one of the oldest and smallest bullrings and an art gallery housed within The Folk Museum near the main square Plaza Virgen de la Peña exhibiting work by local artists. Indeed many artists travel from far and wide to capture the beauty of the village and breath-taking views. The pueblo has many shops selling handmade quality jewellery, handbags, accessories, souvenirs and clothing with numerous restaurants and tapas bars. You also have Fuengirola just at the bottom of the hill with every supermarket you could wish for.
Mijas Costa is the perfect place for lots of different activities and is very popular among foreigners moving to the Costa del Sol especially for golf aficionados as it is the largest golf resort in Spain. It has 8 championship golf courses including La Cala Golf Resort with three 18 hole courses, Mijas Golf International with 36 holes incorporating golf courses Los Olivos and Los Lagos, 18 hole Miraflores Golf and Calanova Golf.
The beach area is a major tourist attraction. Aside from golf there are a variety of equestrian centres for horse-back riding, several tennis clubs and lots of watersport facilities around La Cala de Mijas.
La Cala de Mijas with a population of over 4,000 inhabitants, is located in the center of Mijas Costa. La Cala, a coastal town center has many restaurants, chiringuitos and shops. It is a large residential area with a multitude of housing developments along the coast nearby. It offers all kinds of services including a health Centre, colleges, schools, a cultural centre and library.
Las Lagunas has a population of over 37,000 inhabitants and is the most modern part of the Municipality, with industrial and commercial areas and all the services of a large city; a health and main emergency centre, sports Centre, various schools and colleges, a cultural Centre, theatre, library and many restaurants and tapas bars
Each area has their own markets; an alternative and fun way to spend a morning for the whole family from 9am-2pm. You can find pottery and traditional crafts – clothing – shoes – leather – linen – fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, potted plants and lots more. The markets are on Wednesday at La Cala de Mijas Fairgrond Mijas Costa, Thursday at Urbanization Calypso and Saturday at Las Lagunas and at La Cala de Mijas Fairground.
There are many numerous hotels and La Cala de Mijas apartments in the Municipality catering for all budgets ranging from: Los Amigos Club, El Oceano Beach Hotel, and TRH Mijas to Hacienda Puerta del Sol, Club Marbella/Regency Palms Crown Resort and Hotel Tamisa Golf.
For education there is St. Anthony’s College Mijas International School and the Municipality is only 30 Km from Malaga International Airport.
